3 ASSEMBLY MEMBERS CHARGED OVER ILLEGAL ROAD LEVY

fort-3Some Assembly members in the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly are reported to have poured out their anger on what they described as illegal act by a group calling itself Adehyeman Transport Operators Union which has their head office at Mbrom in Kumasi.

This was confirmed by three assembly members Mr. Lawrence Adu Afful Nkwanta electoral area, James Nana Prempeh Oforikrom electoral area, and Alex Bediako Agric Dwenease electoral area. According to them the four cedis road levy by the Adehyeman Transport Operators Union is illegal since there is no such contract to that effect as much as the assembly is concerned thus they have vowed to initiate investigations into the matter to bring those perpetrators to book.

However investigation conducted by OTECNEWS revealed the Adehyeman Transport Operators Union which consist of seven transport unions namely Professional, Ultimate, Concern, Commercial, Redeemer, G.P.R.T.U 1 and G.P.R.T.U 2 have illegally entered into contractual agreement with the former mayor of the Kumasi Metropolis Kojo Bonsu to the drivers who ply their route on Adehyeman, Kejetia and Doctor Mensah areas.

Meanwhile,  speaking in an interview with the chairman of the Adehyeman Transport Operators Union Alhaji Usman he disclosed to OTECNEWS that they have employed people to levy drivers by issuing ticket to those who operate on Adehyeman Kejetia Doctor and KO route to the amount of forty and fifty Ghana Cedis respectively. According to him, they report dailly back to the KMA’s managers at the Kumasi Race course lorry terminal after close of work.

On the contrary a section of the drivers who spoke to OTECNEWS expressed their disappointment in the KMA for earmarking a side of a road to the private Transport Operators to levy drivers who ply that route.
