All ten regions affected by fall armyworms – Deputy Minister of Agric discloses

The Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture has revealed that the fall armyworms have now affected all the ten regions of Ghana.
The last region, which is the Volta was affected on Thursday, William Quaitoo Agyapong told Onua FM on Friday.
The alarming rate at which the worms are spreading though poses a serious threat to the nation’s food security, the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr. Akoto Afriyie has assured that measures are in place to forestall any food shortage.
Reports suggest that about 6,000 hectors of maize farm have already been destroyed. According to the deputy minister, some farmers in parts of the country have refused to even plant again, fearing a possible attack this season too.
William Quaitoo Agyapong who has been appointed chairman of a taskforce to ensure effective spraying exercise to get rid of the fall armyworms, indicated that the case in Togo is even dire.
Meanwhile, he said a former deputy minister under former President Kufuor, Dr. Nii Hammond has been asked to work with the task force to train farmers on how to spray in the right way.
He noted that since the worms usually hide and feed on leaves of plants in the evening, the ministry has been advised to do all spraying at night.
