Former President Jerry John Rawlings has expressed worry about the high level of poor environmental sanitation in the metropolis.
He called for commitment and vigorous public education for the public to know their responsibilities towards the environment.
The former President said this when Mr Mohammed Adjei Sowah, the Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive, paid a visit to him at his residence in Accra.
Mr Sowah made the courtesy call on the ex-President as he embarked on a tour of corporate institutions along the Independence Avenue corridors to inspect their premises to ensure good sanitation.
Mr Rawlings said he was greatly concerned with the pollution of the environment, destruction of trees, and more seriously indiscriminate dumping of waste.
He called on the Accra Metropolitan Assembly to infuse new stringent measures besides the bye-laws to deal with the people who do not observe environmental cleanliness to change their attitude.
“I will appreciate every opportunity to collaborate with you to ensure that the people change their minds towards the environment,” he said.
Mr Sowah said his focus was to ensure a clean environment in Accra and help fulfil President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s vision of making the metropolis cleaner than what it was in the past.
He said a clean environment saves lives and he would ensure that the residents live up to their responsibilities by observing good sanitation practices.
He later interacted with some directors at the World Bank offices in Ghana, MTN, Vanguard Assurance, National Insurance Commission, the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints, Zenith Bank, Agricultural Development Bank and the CAL Bank.
Mr Sowah said the AMA would continue to appreciate the support of various institutions in its operations to make Accra clean and safe.
