A/R: Severe Flooding hits Atonsu

Residents of Atonsu S-line, a suburb of Kumasi in the Ashanti region have experienced severe flooding following Tuesday’s heavy downpour.

The Meteorological Agency earlier warned Ghanaians of a thunderstorm approaching the country from neighboring Togo.

The service in an alert copied to Otecfmghana.com, said areas in the country expected to be affected include Accra, Tema, Adenta, Sege and Battor.

“A moderate thunderstorm and rain-bearing cloud system observed over the southern half of Togo is expected to move west to produce rains over the country accordingly,” the statement said.

Other areas expected to be affected included, Old Ningo and Sakumono.

Kumasi, Kete Krachie, Yendi, Tamale, Akwatia, Winneba, Agona Swedru, Mankessim and its environs are expected to be affected as well

The rains began around 17:00hrs local time came with heavy winds and thunder as warned meteorological service.

According to OTEC FM’S Evans Agyei Sikapa who visited the place after the rain reported that almost every temporal structure on the streets of a popular place within the s-line area known as Bonsuom junction were totally submerged

Some residents who spoke to Evans Agyei Sikapa blamed the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) for the unfortunate incident for failing to desilt the main drainage system in the area which resulted in an overflow during the downpour.

Mr Akwasi Agyeman one of the affected residents stated that although no deaths were recorded, properties worth Millions of Cedis have been destroyed most leaving residents with no place to spend the night.

They are however calling on National Disaster Management Organization and the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly to come to their aide as are stranded.
