Respond to Our Concerns – PUWU tells Gov’t

The Public Utilities Workers Union (PUWU) has called on government to respond to concerns raised in their letters and desist from sharing such information in the media.

According to the General Secretary of the Union, Michael Adumatta Nyantakyi, a first letter to engage government to ensure the welfare of the Members which was written in May received no response but is now being addressed in the media by the energy minister.

“we wrote him the letter somewhere in May, meanwhile they are working to privatize ECG and we can’t sit down for them to finish before we discuss what is due us. We have written you a letter but you don’t want to respond and you are speaking to the media baout it, presently we are not going to make any comment on what he has said,” he stated.

Staff of Electricity Company of Ghana in the Eastern region on Tuesday 26, September 2017 embarked on a demonstration to push for the payment of severance package as part of the ECG concession agreement.

Minister for Energy, Boakye Agyarko, has warned staff of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) who are demanding severance packages to be prepared to leave their posts upon receipt of their packages.

His comments come in the wake of protests by staff of the company Wednesday in the Eastern region in demand for their severance packages.

But in an interview with Otec FM, Mr Michael Adumatta Nyantakyi categorically stated that “presently we are not going to make any comment on what he has said if that is the government’s position, he should respond to the letter and tell us that this is the position of the government then we will take it from there”

“So that we will know that they don’t want to engage the labour Unions and we will know the next line of an action but we are not going to even comment about what the minister said it at all,” he reiterated.

Mr Michael Adumatta Nyantakyi insisted that if that is the stands of the government and they don’t want to follow the right procedure then they still need to compensate us.
