Algeria coach Leekens resigns

Algeria coach Georges Leekens has left his post following ‘Les Fennecs’ shock elimination from the ongoing Total Africa Cup of Nations Gabon 2017.

His resignation comes few hours after favourites Algeria shockingly crashed out after 2-2 draw against Senegal in their ultimate Group B match on Monday in Franceville. ‘Les Fennecs’ managed only two draws finishing on two points, five shy of Senegal and four poorer than Tunisia.

“In the aftermath of the early elimination of the national team in the first round of 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, Georges Leekens resigned from his position as national coach.

“After his resignation, Mr. Leekens thanked all members of the technical, medical and administrative staff for their collaboration. Mr Leekens wishes the members of his staff a lot of success for the rest of their careers,” the Algeria Football Federation said in a statement.

The 67-year old Belgian took over the reins of ‘Les Fennecs’ last October, replacing Serbian Milovan Rajevac, who also resigned after a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Cameroon in Blida.
