2 Chinese illegal miners granted bail

A Bekwai Circuit court has granted bail to two (2) Chinese nationals arrested for attempting launch into mining activities without a licence at Dotom, near Jacobu in the Amansie central district of the Ashanti.

The court presided over by His Lordhip Frederick Nawura granted bail to the 2 suspects, Wu Bi Zhong and Wu Yong Zhong in the sum of Ghc 60,000 with one surety, to be justified.

Deputy Inspector Stephen Ofori told the court that the district chief executive of the area, Hon. Kwame Asamoah Boateng informed the police about the activities of some illegal miners at a town called Dotom near Jacobu.

According to him, the police proceeded to the said mining site and met the accused persons and others including Chinese and Ghanaians with 3 excavators and a polytank full of diesel.

The police managed to get the accused persons arrested however, the others managed to escape into a nearby bush.

He explained that a search done at the scene of the crime revealed that the accused persons had conducted a soil test at three different places to see if they were rich in gold so that they could go ahead and mine.

The accused persons could not provide any licence authorizing them to mine as small scale miners, during investigation but mentioned one Li Wei Zhong who is currently at large as their employer.

The police, he said, conducted the necessary investigations, charged the accused persons with the offence and arraigned them before the court.
