Breast Cancer High in the Eastern Region – Dr. Wiafe

President of Breast Care International (BCI), Dr Beatrice Wiafe Addai has indicated that the Eastern region is among the regions in the country that has the highest rate of advanced breast cancer.

She made the revelation when she paid a courtesy call on the New Juaben Traditional Council to seek their permission to organize their annual ‘WALK FOR THE CURE’ in the Eastern regional capital, Koforidua , on the 14th of October, 2017.

The programme which is under the theme ‘Breast Cancer Awareness; Fight, Cure, Survive, Hope; Together, We Can Make an Impact’ is the 7th time in a roll since it started in Kumasi in 2011.

According to her, cases recorded from the Eastern region are alarming and scary, and requires the urgent attention of Nananom and all stakeholders to prevent women in the region from dying early.

Dr Beatrice Wiafe Addai however appealed to the traditional authorities to involve themselves in the fight against breast cancer by providing the necessary and convenient platforms for women to be screened regularly for early detection of the disease to save them.

Kontihene of New Juaben Traditional Area in the Eastern region who represented the Omanhene of the area, Dasebre Emeritus Oti Boateng, commended Dr Wiafe Addai for single handedly fighting for women against breast cancer, through education over the past 14 years.

The Kontihene, Baffour Tutu Boateng, also said her activities have helped reduce the effects of the much dreaded enemy of women and encouraged her to keep up the good sacrificial work she has taken upon herself.

He called on government and stakeholders to engage themselves in the control of breast cancer by way of sponsoring breast cancer awareness programmes through campaign in the rural areas where the disease is rampant.

He noted that the disease which has no respect for any person, should not be left in the hands of a particular persons or group of persons who have limited human and financial resources to fight it.

‘’As a victim of breast cancer, I will do everything possible to make the programme in the Eastern region a very successful one’’, Baffour Tutu Boateng assured.
