No need to politicize security issues – Okudzeto Ablakwa

Member of parliament for North Tongu, Hon. Okudzeto Ablakwa has said that it is needless to politisize threats of terrorism and national security issues.

Mr Ablakwa recently warned that Ghana faces a possible terror attack following a travel advisory on the website of the Canadian Embassy cautioning citizens wanting to travel to Ghana that there is a looming threat of terrorist attack on Ghana.

In what he described as politicisation of the issue, members of the minority and some Ghanaians chastised him for raising false alarm, calling for his arrest.

The ranking member of the parliamentary select committee in parliament however maintains that Ghana should  improve security following terror attacks in Burkina Faso on Sunday that claimed at least 17 lives.

”Once a terror alert from these foreign countries is not updated or changed, it means the threat still persists so instead of wanting to be partisan about the issue lets us find ways to protect the country from people who may want to hurt us”, he advised

He called on government to not take such terror threats for granted especially at a time when terrorist groups have converged on the African continent and can attack any country from their bases in places like Libya.

”As a member of the committee on foreign affairs, I am just raising up the issues to raise awareness for the relevant authorities to act and save the country from any surprise attacks.

Hon. Okudzeto noted that a warning of that nature coming from countries experienced in counter-terrorism like the US, UK and Canada should not be swept under the carpet and treated as mere travel advice.
