JHS Student Drowns in Galamsey pit

An 18 year old boy has died after falling into a rainwater-filled, abandoned Galamsey pit at Adom a suburb of Asiwa in the Bosome Freho district of the Ashanti region.

The deceased has been identified as Owuraku, an 18 year old, form 2 junior High School student.

A resident of the town who revealed this incident to Otec FM, Philip Oppong believes the deceased fell into the pit around 4:00pm and drowned.

He explains that his body was discovered by residents 2hours later but it was too late to save him.

Phillip Oppong described the incident as pathetic and downplayed suggestions that the deceased might have been involved in illegal mining activities popularly know as galamsey.

The body was taken to the police station for preliminary investigation and later transferred to the morgue.

Meanwhile, the government through the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources John Peter Amewu has vowed to end galamsey in the country.

He added that though there are many abandoned galamsey pits in the area, the activities of illegal miners have gone down due to the efforts of the District authorities and the Operation Vanguard.
