State prosecutors will tody set the stage for the first of a series of prosecutions of high profile personalities in the National Democratic Congress accused of corruption under the erstwhile John Mahama administration.
Former chief executive of the Ghana COCOBO Dr. Stephen Opuni who has been accused of corruption and causing financial loss to the state among others, is expected to be in court today (Friday) for the first time to answer charges against him.
He will be the first key member of the Mahama-led government to be charged for prosecution since President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo took over the governance of the country on January 7, 2017.
Dr. Opuni and one Siedu Agongo variously face a total of 27 charges of abetment of crime, conspiracy to commit crime, defrauding by false pretences, willfully causing financial loss to the state, contravention of the public procurement act and corruption by public officer.
State prosecutors on March 14 filled the charges at the Accra High Court registry, and the case scheduled to be called in court for the first time on Friday, March 23 but has been rescheduled for today, March 26, 2018.
Barring any surprises in court, the plea of Dr. Opuni and his accomplice will be taken to set the stage for the first of a number of such prosecutions to take place in the coming days.
Chief State Attorney at the Attorney General’s Department, Evelyn D. Keelson, who signed the charges against the two is expected to lead a team of prosecutors for the case.
Dr. Opuni’s lawyers are expected to apply for bail once his plea is taken.
