We’ve not introduced official uniform for teachers -GES

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has refuted claims suggesting that it has introduced an official uniform for Ghanaian teachers across the country.

The disclaimer follows the emergence of pictures of teachers of Akwasiase Methodist Primary School in the Ahafo Ano North Municipality, Ashanti Region on social media wearing uniforms.

A statement issued by GES on Sunday (10 April ) said the service will not introduce a uniform for teachers without engaging the teacher unions.

“GES is one of the largest government agencies in Ghana. We employ more than half of all government employees. If we want to introduce uniforms for teachers we won’t do that through social media and over the weekend,” it said in a Facebook post.“In this era of unionised labour, GES cannot introduce a uniform for teachers without engaging the teacher unions,” it added.

Meanwhile, Sylvia Yeboah, one of the teachers at Akwasiase Methodist Basic School on Monday said on The Asaase Breakfast Show that the uniforms are not prescribed by the GES. She said “it’s our own initiative to inspire the students to become teachers.”

She also added that the pictures were taken “last year September and I don’t know why they have started coming up all of a sudden this weekend.”
