Woman who caused Kejetia fire outbreak has been arrested

The woman suspected to have caused a fire outbreak at the Kejetia new market in the Kumasi Metropolis of the Ashanti has been arrested.

The suspect identified as 60-year-old Felicia Opoku was reportedly arrested by police after officers of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) reported the case.

The woman who deals in rubber mats has been arrested on suspicion that she caused the fire outbreak.

The General Secretary of the Combined Traders Association at the Kejetia Market, Reuben Ameh disclosed this to OTEC News’ Jacob Agyenim Boateng.

He noted that the woman was arrested on Tuesday, March 21, 2023.

Parts of the Kumasi Kejetia Market have been shut down following a fire outbreak on Wednesday, March 15, 2023.

Some 54 shops according to fire officials were affected by the inferno.

Cause of fire

Following the incident, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia visited the area to commiserate with the traders.

Dr Bawumia, however, disclosed that investigations into the fire incident show that it was caused by a trader who was cooking inside her shop.

He however pledged the government’s support to the affected traders after the investigation.
