Vice President of the Republic, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has stated that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has what it takes to win the 2024 general elections.
This, he said, is based on the fact that the ruling party has delivered on its major promises and can even do more if re-elected for a record third consecutive term.
In stressing his point, Vice President Bawumia jabbed former President John Mahama for touting himself on the “infrastructure king” in Ghana.
Dr Bawumia said Akufo-Addo’s first four years saw more infrastructural developments nationwide, on top of unparalleled social interventions, making it odd to appreciate the claims by the former President now seeking to lead his party again in the next presidential race.
This would be the fourth time John Mahama will be the standard bearer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) if he wins the party’s presidential primary next month.
Dr Bawumia is expected to contest when the NPP goes to congress in November to choose its flagbearer and he is seen as the likely candidate to beat.
The Vice President compared records of the two leading parties when he was addressing participants after a well-attended workout session organised by the NPP. The party held its “Arise and Build Unity Walk” on Easter Saturday, 8 April 2023, at Kwahu (from Bepong to Atibie).
Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia told the excited crowd that they should prepare to go out there proudly next year to campaign to “break the 8” because the Akufo-Addo administration has offered them a strong record of delivery, probably unmatched in the history of the Fourth Republic.
“If you look at the infrastructure of the country, particularly, roads, it is clear that no government in the history of Ghana has been able to construct as many roads as has been executed by the current NPP government.
“On interchanges, the evidence available to Ghanaians is that no government in our history has delivered the number of interchanges that the Akufo-Addo government has built within its term in office.
“If you look at bridges, it is the same and if you look at classrooms, 5,411 have been built. No government in our history has built more classrooms than the NPP,” he stressed.
Turning his attention to the sports sector, the Vice President observed that when the Akufo-Addo government first assumed office in 2017, there were only 2 astroturf pitches in the country. “Today, there are over 80 of them and virtually every constituency in the country has one,” he remarked.
On National Communication Authority (NCA) licensed fiber optic cable installations across the country, Dr Bawumia noted that 93% of the existing infrastructure in the nation as at now were installed during the time of the Akufo-Addo government.
Ongoing efforts aimed at digitalizing the country, according to the Vice President, is transforming our society and bringing greater efficiency.
He noted that inspite of the skeptism of the NDC on the introduction of the ‘Ghana Card’, the National Identification Authority (NIA) has executed it and over 17 million Ghanaians have successfully registered.
“Today, Ghanaians traveling from any part of the world to Ghana can use their Ghana Card to return home without any hindrance,” Dr Mahamudu Bawumia stated.
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, on Tuesday 4 April 2023, gave the clearest hint yet that he is lacing his boots to contest the flagbearership slot for 2024 general elections.
In a post on his verified Facebook page, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, gave the clearest hint yet of his intentions to contest for the flagbearership of the New Patriotic Party for 2024.
And, he did so by drawing a link between what seems to be his presidential ambition with a Biblical verse, Matthew 19:26.
Dr Bawumia posted a picture which had the Ghana flag to the left and the NPP’s red, white and blue flag to the right with the inscription “It Is Possible” at the top of the two flags.
The post within one hour after it surfaced on his Facebook wall, went viral, drawing comments from some of the over 900,000 followers of the Vice President on Facebook.
One of the Vice President’s followers, Samuel Twum Essien, wrote; “Yes indeed it is always possible. It is always possible you will be our next leader. It is always possible you will be our next president.
“It is always possible Ghana will go higher and higher under your government. Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia the man I truly love from the whole bottom of my heart”.
Albert Asante, on the hand said; “God bless our homeland Ghana. It is indeed possible #DMB2024”.
Ama Utah, in response to the post also said “our future is about to be bright. In DMB we trust!!! #BestToLead #NextToLead #DMB2024.
Boakye Prince, said “May Dr. Bawumia be protected by Allah to break the 8 and George Emil on his part said; “Definitely Possible. #DMB is a Ghana Project#.
The big challenge
No party in Ghana’s history has managed to win a third successive presidential election. That is the big challenge the NPP faces on December 7, 2024. And, the message from the Vice President to his party members appeared to be that it is possible to “break the 8”.
