MTN Ghana marks 30 years with US$1.1bn investment to expand digital infrastructure

Telecommunications giant MTN Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to Ghana’s digital transformation with a planned investment of US$1.1 billion over the next three years to strengthen digital infrastructure, expand connectivity and improve the quality of services across the country.

The investment forms part of MTN Ghana’s strategy to consolidate its position as a leading digital services provider while supporting Ghana’s transition towards a more connected and digitally driven economy.

The company, which is celebrating 30 years of operations in Ghana, says the investment will support network expansion, infrastructure modernisation, digital platforms, fintech services and other initiatives aimed at meeting the growing demand for reliable connectivity.

Speaking at the MTN Media and Stakeholders Forum in Kumasi, the Chief Enterprise Business Officer of MTN Ghana, Angela Mensah-Poku, said the company’s three decades of operations had been characterised by innovation, partnership and a strong commitment to the development of Ghana.

She said MTN Ghana had grown alongside the country, evolving from a telecommunications company focused largely on voice and SMS services into a major digital operator providing connectivity, financial technology and enterprise solutions.

Mrs Mensah-Poku said the company’s investment programme was intended not only to expand its infrastructure but also to help create an enabling environment for businesses, entrepreneurs and individuals to participate meaningfully in the digital economy.

She said MTN Ghana would continue to invest in network capacity and coverage to improve customers’ experience and ensure that more communities could benefit from reliable digital services.

As part of the company’s network expansion programme, MTN Ghana has announced plans to roll out at least 500 new network sites by the end of 2026, with the objective of improving coverage and service quality.

The Chief Enterprise Business Officer also highlighted the important role of the media, particularly journalists in the Ashanti Region, in MTN Ghana’s growth over the past three decades.

She said the media had helped tell the company’s story, communicate its initiatives to communities and provide a platform for customers and other stakeholders to raise concerns about its services.

According to her, the relationship between MTN and the media had been an important part of the company’s journey since its entry into Ghana’s telecommunications market in 1996.

Mrs Mensah-Poku said the 30th anniversary, being celebrated under the theme “30 Years of Progress – Powered by You,” was an opportunity for the company to acknowledge the contribution of its customers, employees, regulators, business partners, communities and the media to its success.

She said the company was not only celebrating its achievements over the past 30 years but was also preparing for the next phase of growth by investing in technology, innovation and sustainable business practices.

She noted that sustainability remained an important component of MTN Ghana’s operations, with the company seeking to improve energy efficiency, reduce its environmental footprint and explore cleaner energy solutions for its infrastructure.

She added that MTN’s commitment to national development extended beyond telecommunications, with the company supporting initiatives in education, health, youth skills development, digital inclusion and the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises.

Mrs Mensah-Poku said MTN Ghana remained a major contributor to the Ghanaian economy through taxation, employment, infrastructure development and investment in communities.

She also pointed to the company’s strong performance in its core business areas, particularly data, Mobile Money and enterprise services, which continue to play a significant role in MTN Ghana’s operations.

Meanwhile, the General Manager of MTN Ghana’s Northern Business District, Nii Adotey Mingle, has urged the public to remain vigilant against fraud and to exercise caution when dealing with suspicious calls, messages and requests for confidential information.

Mr Mingle advised customers not to disclose their PINs, passwords or other sensitive information to unknown persons and urged them to verify suspicious communications through official MTN channels before taking any action.

He said the public had an important role to play in helping to combat fraud by reporting suspicious activities and individuals to the appropriate authorities or MTN offices.

Mr Mingle also cautioned members of the public against buying MTN SIM cards above the approved price of GH¢10.

He urged anyone who encounters a person selling an MTN SIM card for more than GH¢10 to report the matter to the nearest MTN office for investigation and appropriate action.

According to him, MTN would take action against authorised sellers found to be violating the company’s requirements, including withdrawing their authority to sell MTN products and services.

He therefore appealed to customers to cooperate with the company by reporting such sellers to help protect the public and ensure that MTN’s products and services were distributed in accordance with approved standards.
