The Ministry of Roads and Highways has revealed comprehensive details of the scope of work for the Accra-Kumasi Expressway project.
The Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, disclosed that the expressway will be a six-lane dual carriage road.
He said this on Monday, September 14, 2026, when the Ghana Armed Forces handed over the 175.6-kilometer cleared Right of Way to the Ministry at Kwaso in the Ejisu Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
According to the Minister, the project comprises a new access-controlled expressway corridor of approximately 198.7 kilometers between Ablekuma in the Greater Accra Region and Sewua in the Ashanti Region.
Out of the total 198.7 kilometers, 176 kilometers will be the newly constructed expressway mainline, while the remaining 23 kilometers will be the upgrading of existing connector roads at the Accra and Kumasi ends to integrate the new route into the existing road networks.
The expressway, classified as a Class A highway, will be a three-lane dual carriageway on a 36-meter standard roadbed with a design speed of 120 kilometers per hour.
The connector roads will be designed as Class B roads with a design speed of 60 kilometers per hour, taking into account the safety of communities.
The project will feature 8 major interchanges at Ablekuma New Town, Adeiso, Ofoase, Akim Oda, Asamankese, Bosomtwe, Sewua Junction and Asante Ofoase, 11 vehicle overpasses, 55 mainline bridges, about 280 reinforced concrete culverts, and four service areas where motorists can stop, rest and service their vehicles.
It will also have eight towing locations and monitoring centers, one fire station, three maintenance depots, and modern road safety systems.
When completed, the expressway is designed to reduce the total traveling distance from Kumasi to Accra by 50 kilometers, cut journey time by 50 percent, and reduces travel cost by approximately 40 percent.
The road is expected to provide safer and more reliable transportation between Ghana’s two largest cities.
