President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the immediate dissolution of the Board of Trustees overseeing Ghana’s National Cathedral project.
The decision, communicated to the trustees in a letter dated September 18, 2026, effectively ends the board’s mandate over the project, which has remained stalled.
The letter, signed by Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Mahama Ayariga, instructed the trustees to begin arrangements for the formal handover of the project site to the Ministry.
They have been given until October 31, 2026, to liaise with the project consultant and complete the handover.
According to the Ministry, taking control of the site will enable the government to assess the project and determine what should happen to it going forward.
The dissolved board was chaired by Apostle Prof. Opoku Onyinah. Copies of the letter were also sent to officials at the Presidency, including the Secretary to the President and the Chief of Staff at Jubilee House, as well as officials of the Ministry and the National Cathedral of Ghana Secretariat.
While communicating the President’s decision, Mr Ayariga expressed appreciation to the trustees for their service and their contribution to the promotion of the Christian faith in Ghana.
The latest directive comes as the government continues to grapple with the future of the National Cathedral project, following earlier steps taken to shut down the project’s Secretariat and initiate processes concerning the trustees.
The September 18 directive now formally requires the trustees to hand over the physical project site, paving the way for the government to decide the next course of action.
The government has not indicated in the latest letter what its final decision on the future of the National Cathedral site will be.
