Odoi-Sykes was instrumental in 2000 victory – NPP mourns former Chairman

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has paid tribute to its late founding figure and former National Chairman, Samuel Arthur Odoi-Sykes, describing him as a “steadfast architect” of the party’s historic electoral victory in 2000.

Odoi-Sykes died on Monday, October 5, 2026, according to a statement issued by his family.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, and signed by National Chairman John Boadu, the NPP said Odoi-Sykes played a pivotal role in laying the party’s institutional and ideological foundations.

It said his tenure as National Chairman from 1998 to 2001 was instrumental in uniting and strengthening the party ahead of the 2000 elections.

“His leadership as National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (1998–2001) was instrumental in uniting and strengthening the Party, culminating in its historic electoral victory in the year 2000 and the first democratic transfer of power between political parties under the Fourth Republic,” the NPP said.

The party also highlighted his earlier service as Member of Parliament for Ashiedu Keteke, now Odododiodioo, during the Third Republic and his subsequent role as Minority Leader of Parliament.

His public service continued after the NPP’s 2000 victory when he served as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Canada from 2001 to 2006.

The NPP said Odoi-Sykes also remained an important source of counsel and institutional knowledge, serving on several national and party committees throughout his career.

“His integrity, humility, intellect, and constant commitment to Ghana’s democratic development will remain an enduring source of inspiration for present and future generations,” the party said.

The NPP extended its condolences to his wife, children, family, friends and associates, saying his legacy of public and party service would remain part of Ghana’s democratic history.

“Ambassador Samuel Arthur Odoi-Sykes has indeed paid his dues, and his legacy of principled leadership, patriotism, and selfless service will forever remain etched in the annals of Ghana’s democratic history,” the party said.
