National Security arrests 8 galamseyers, seizes excavators over destruction near school, health center at Asuoho-Konkoma

A joint operation by national security operatives in the Ashanti Region has resulted in the arrest of eight individuals and the seizure of four excavators for engaging in illegal mining activities near a school and a clinic at Asuoho Konkoma in the Bosomtwe District.
This comes at the heels of a report filed by OTEC News on the destructive activities of the Galamseyers.
The operation, carried out on Friday, followed reports of widespread environmental destruction in the area, which threatened the safety of the Asuoho Konkoma D/A Basic School and the community health center.
Captain Kwame Jabari, Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator, confirmed that the illegal miners were no longer in the area, adding that the excavators were in the custody of national security.
Residents had expressed concerns about the proximity of the illegal mining activities to the school and health center, prompting the authorities to take action.
District authorities have begun reclamation efforts to restore the damaged land under the supervision of the Ghana Police Service.
Illegal mining remains a significant challenge in Ghana, causing deforestation, river pollution, and destruction of farmlands, despite ongoing government efforts to crack down on the practice
