Kumasi: Traders threaten to boycott 2028 polls if Bawumia is elected NPP flagbearer

Hundreds of traders in dozens of markets in the Ashanti Region have warned they will punish the New Patriotic Party (NPP) if delegates elect Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s flagbearer.

The traders are angry with Dr. Bawumia’s wife, Samira Bawumia, over allegations she demolished ten houses belonging to George Oti Bonsu, a native of the Ashanti Region and NPP member.

The traders claim Samira Bawumia used her power as Second Lady to act against a party member and has failed to comply with calls  to rebuild the houses.

The traders from Suame, Bantama, Kejetia, Kronom, Asawase, among other markets in a press conference on Monday January 26,2026 urged NPP to elect a candidate whose followers will not intimidate party members

“We believe she used her power as the second lady of the country to work against party members hence do not deserve to become First Lady,” they said.

The traders have called on delegates to reject Dr. Bawumia in the primaries, threatening to sit out the 2028 polls if he is elected to lead the party.
