Members of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly on Thursday (26 February) re-elected Patrick Kwame Frimpong as Presiding Member after a decisive “Yes or No” vote, ending a process that had earlier produced two inconclusive rounds.
The vote followed failed elections on 19 February, when neither Frimpong nor his challenger, Ernest Baffour Ofori, was able to secure the two-thirds majority required under local government rules.
In the rescheduled poll, Ofori withdrew from the contest, pledging his support for the incumbent “in the interest of the development of the KMA,” paving the way for a single-candidate confirmation vote.
Of the 66 assembly members, 58 were present and all voted in favour of Frimpong, comfortably exceeding the threshold needed to retain the post for a further two-year term.
Following the result, Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi praised assembly members for prioritising development over personal ambition, describing the outcome as a step toward stability in the administration of Kumasi, Ghana’s second-largest city.
