Mahama unveils 50,000-unit ‘Teacher Dabre’ Housing Project

President John Dramani Mahama has announced a major housing intervention for teachers, revealing plans to construct 50,000 housing units under a new initiative dubbed “Teacher Dabre.”

Delivering his 2026 State of the Nation Address (SONA) in Parliament on Friday, February 27, President Mahama acknowledged the persistent accommodation challenges facing teachers, particularly those posted to rural and underserved communities.

The President highlighted that beyond providing shelter, the initiative is expected to strengthen teacher motivation and retention, particularly in rural and hard-to-reach areas, while ensuring that teachers can live, work and retire with dignity and security.

According to the President, the programme is a collaborative effort involving the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF), the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAPS) and Ghana Education Service Occupational Pension Scheme (GESOPS).

He explained that the partnership demonstrates a collective commitment by key stakeholders in the  education sector to address one of the longstanding concerns of teachers nationwide.

“The Teachers Housing Initiative is a joint effort involving District Assemblies Common Fund, GETFund, GNAT and GESOPS and the aim is to build 50,000 housing units for teachers. This initiative is called ‘Teacher Dabre’,” he said.
