The Ashanti Regional Constituency Chairmen’s Caucus of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced plans to hold a night vigil in honour of the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
According to a press statement issued on July 27, 2026, the vigil will take place on August 14, 2026, at the DMB Regional Office in Asokwa, a day before the party’s Ashanti Regional elections.
The caucus said the event is intended to demonstrate solidarity with Chairman Wontumi following his recent conviction and imprisonment in an illegal mining case, which it described as an injustice.
It also stated that the vigil would celebrate what it called Chairman Wontumi’s “unprecedented and illustrious leadership” during his tenure as Ashanti Regional Chairman.
“The Ashanti Regional Constituency Chairmen’s Caucus announces a Night Vigil on August 14, 2026, at the DMB Regional Office, Asokwa, on the eve of the Ashanti Regional elections, in honour of Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi),” the statement said.
The caucus further noted that the gathering is meant to send “a clear signal, locally and internationally, that we will not stay silent.”
It has therefore invited constituency executives, party faithful and well-wishers across the region to participate in the event.
“We call on all constituency executives, party faithful, and well-wishers to join us,” the statement added.
The organisers assured members of the public that the vigil would be conducted peacefully and in a disciplined manner.
The announcement comes after the Accra High Court sentenced Chairman Wontumi to 20 years’ imprisonment following his conviction in an illegal mining case involving Akonta Mining Company Limited’s concession at Samreboi in the Western Region.
