Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has filed an application at the High Court in Accra seeking bail pending the determination of his appeal against his conviction.
A court document dated 5 August 2026 shows that the application was filed at the Criminal Division ‘4’ of the High Court under Suit No. CR/0004/2026. The motion was officially filed on 6 August 2026.
The application names The Republic as the respondent, while Bernard Antwi Boasiako is listed as the 1st Appellant/Applicant. Also named in the case are Kwame Antwi (At Large) as the second accused person and Akonta Mining Company Limited as the third appellant.
According to the notice of motion, lawyers for Mr Boasiako are asking the court to grant him bail while his appeal is being heard. The application is brought under Section 96(1) of Act 30 and Section 33(1) of Act 459.
The motion states that Mr Boasiako is currently being held at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison and argues that he should be released on bail pending the outcome of the appeal. The document says the request is based on grounds contained in an accompanying affidavit and also seeks “such further order(s) as this Honourable Court may deem meet.”
The application has been filed by lawyer Samuel Atta Akyea of Zoe, Akyea & Co., who is representing the first and third appellants.
The High Court has scheduled the application to be heard on 19 August 2026 at 9:00 a.m., or as soon thereafter as counsel can be heard.
The motion has also been directed to be served on the Office of the Attorney-General as the respondent, as well as the Director of Prisons at Nsawam Medium Security Prison.
The outcome of the bail application could determine whether the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) remains in custody while his appeal against his conviction proceeds before the courts. The High Court is expected to consider the legal arguments from both the defence and the prosecution before ruling on whether the applicant satisfies the requirements for bail pending appeal.
