Dennis Miracle Aboagye questions neutrality of EC Deputy Chair over alleged NDC campaign activities

New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Communications Director Dennis Miracle Aboagye has questioned the neutrality of Electoral Commission Deputy Chair Emelia Afi Agbenyo alleging that she has publicly campaigned for the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Speaking to Arafat Musah on Morning Starr on Starr FM, Mr Aboagye argued that the appointee’s alleged political activities raise concerns about her ability to remain impartial in the discharge of her duties at the Electoral Commission.

He claimed that Afi Agbenyo had appeared on an NDC campaign rally platform, publicly speaking and urging voters to support the party.

“How do you, in any right conscience, ask us to buy the lie, the falsehood, the pretence that such a person is going to be neutral in the execution of her mandate as an Electoral Commission?” he asked.

Mr Aboagye also cited her alleged involvement in student politics at the University of Ghana, claiming that she was a year behind him and that their political affiliations were known among students during the period.

“…People who were part of the university community between 2003 and 2008 would be familiar with the political activities he was referring to”. He said.

Mr Aboagye questioned how someone he considers politically aligned with the NDC could be expected to act as an impartial referee in electoral contests involving the NDC and the NPP.

He maintained that the Electoral Commission’s role in overseeing elections requires its leadership to be perceived as impartial by political parties and the public, arguing that the alleged campaign activities cast doubt on whether that expectation can be met in this case.

This concerns form part of his broader criticism of the appointment, which he argues raises questions about the independence and neutrality expected of the Electoral Commission’s leadership.
