Political interference compromising headmaster selection since 2016 – Mr Hall Baidoo

Educationist and a former Headmaster for Kumasi High School has said profoundly that the process of selecting head teachers had not been the best since 2016

Speaking on Otec FM’s morning show ‘Nyansapo’ on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, Mr. Hall-Baidoo alleged that meritocracy and institutional integrity have been sidelined in favor of political patronage, undermining leadership standards across some secondary schools.

”I am saying this on authority that the process of selecting headteachers for Senior High Schools has been political since 2016,” Mr. Hall-Baidoo stated passionately. “You can become a headmaster today only when you know a political figure or are affiliated with a political party.”

Mr. Hall-Baidoo’s comments come on the heels of recent violent unrest at Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS).

The disturbances erupted following a high-profile sexual abuse scandal, which escalated into violent confrontations on campus, including physical assaults targeting the school’s headmaster.

The Ministry of Education has formally referred the case to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service for police inquiry and potential prosecution.

Reacting to it, Mr Hall-Baidoo intimated that such incidents are becoming frequent because some Headmasters feel protected by powerful individuals due to their political affiliations.

He argued that some school administrators feel untouchable and act with impunity because they rely on political godfathers for protection rather than public accountability.

He further criticized the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Ministry of Education (MoE) for failing to firmly sanction headteachers and staff implicated in student abuse.

To restore integrity and professionalism to school management, Mr. Hall-Baidoo outlined the Ghana Education Service must overhaul the selection system, ensuring interviews and promotions are strictly based on competence, leadership potential, and professional track record devoid of political considerations.
