Gov’t to double royalties of mining C’ties
The Minister-designate for Lands and Natural Resources, John Peter Amewu, has disclosed government’s commitment to double the royalties paid mining communities in Ghana.
He made this known at a programme to inaugurate the Resettlement Project at the Edkan Mine in Ayanfuri.
He said “with regard to mining royalties, the policy of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is to ensure that mining community receives a higher share.”
According to current figures, 80% of mining royalties go to government’s coffers, 10% to the Minerals Commission with another 10% to the communities.
But according to Mr. Amewu, government’s 80% will be reduced to 70% in order to increase the communities’ to 20%.
The additional 10%, he said, would be given to the District Assemblies to be used specifically for developing infrastructure in the mining communities.
“This will ensure that more value is retained in the mining communities,” he added.
