Curfew intensified at Alavanyo and Nkonya after 15-yr-old is killed

Government has intensified the curfew hours imposed on Alavanyo and Nkonya townships in the Volta Region, a day after the shooting and killing of a 15-year-old at Alavanyo.
Alavanyo and Nkonya have been caught up in a protracted land dispute spanning almost a century with occasional violence attacks that result in death of people from both sides.
Effective Sunday, the hours which were previously from 11:00pm to 500am each day, will be intensified from 8:00pm to 5:30am, a statement issued by the Interior Ministry Friday stated.
The review was based on the advice of the Volta Regional Security Council and in line with Executive Instrument.
“Government continues to express its appreciation to the chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, youth and people of the area for their efforts in ensuring peace in the area and urges them to use the established mechanisms for the resolution of all conflicts and disputes,” the statement said.
It said the ban on carrying of arms, ammunition and any offensive weapon in the two towns are still in force, warning “any person found with any arms or ammunitions will be arrested and prosecuted”.
