We had agreement with NAGRAT over promotion arrears – GES

The Ghana Education Service (GES) says it will not be moved by the demands of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) in the Central Region to pay arrears owed some teachers who have been promoted.

This, the GES explains, is because there had been a prior agreement with all teacher unions to scrap such payments due to the non-availability of funds.

The Central Regional Branch of NAGRAT had expressed outrage at the non-payment of these arrears to more than 11,000 teachers who were promoted some weeks ago. They were demanding the government to pay them their arrears, but the Public Relations Officer of the GES, Rev. Jonathan Bettey believes these demands are unfair.

Speaking to Citi fm, he noted that, “the Ghana Education Service, along with our teacher unions, met and agreed that this year’s promotion is without arrears. This has been a collective decision by all stakeholders and teacher unions.”

By the end of this month [May] those who were successful in their promotion interview have received their letters and their salaries are being processed and they will be receiving it this month ending. All monies will be paid and they will be put on scale immediately, which has never happened in this country before,” Rev. Bettey stated.
