Parliament Salutes Farmers as Ghana Marks Farmers Day

The Chairman of Food, Agriculture and Cocoa Affairs Committee of Parliament, Kwame Asafu-Adjei says there is strong justification for farmers day to be celebrated every year because it has helped boost the growth of the Agriculture sector.

He said government will continue to put in place flexible programs that will enable the farmers access loan for enhance their food production.

Mr. Asafu- Adjei said governments flagship program Planting for Food and Agriculture has come at an opportune time to create more jobs and encourage more youth to take up farming.

Mr. Asafu- Adjei said this in a statement in parliament to salute gallant farmers as the nation marks Farmers day today.

He added that government’s pension scheme for farmers and fishermen will encourage more youth to engage in farming.

The Ranking Member on the Committee of Food, Agriculture and Cocoa Affairs, Eric Opoku, said it is sad that the country has been experiencing decline in the growth of Agriculture year in year out despite the measures being put in place to boost Agriculture and food production.

Noting that, the country has not taken enough precautions to prevent the negative factors that triggered the institutionalization of farmers from recurring.
