Supporters need education to stop Hooligalism – kojo Yankah

The Western Regional Football Association (RFA) chairman, Mr Kojo Yankah, has called for more education for supporters of football clubs to curb hooligalism in the game.

Speaking in an interview with Osei Akoto Kanu on Otec royal Sports, Mr. Yankah noted that a lot more education needs to be given to supporters of the various about the decisions of refrees and match officials whether for or against their clubs.

According to him, there are many decisions that refrees make on the field of play which most supporters do not understand and fans should also know that refrees are also human and are bound to make mistakes.

”A refree is running on the pitch and at the same time intepreting the law, so he is likely to make mistakes.”

He disclosed that football fans have a lot to learn to be able to respect the decisions of refrees and match officials.

His comments come as part of the 15th anniversary of the May 9 stadium disaster.

Ghana witnessed a horrifying incident after a football match involving rival clubs Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko at the Accra Sports Stadium, in which 127 football fans perished, when policemen on duty at the stadium threw tear gas at rioting supporters in the stands.

Tagged Black Wednesday, it represents the darkest day in Ghanaian football history.

Cape Coast referee, Wilson Sey was accused of allowing Ishmael Addo’s purported offside goal to stand to draw Hearts of Oak level after Lawrence Adjei had opened the scoring for Asante Kotoko, a decision which was widely attributed to the violence that led to the May 9 disaster in 2011.

Angry fans started throwing missiles onto the pitch in protest of referee Sey’s decision with some supporters claiming he disregarded a flag by his assistant referee signaling Ishmael Addo was in an offside position.

The situation escalated resulting in the firing of tear gas into the stands.
