Near blows at press conference at Atwima -Ofoase
There was commotion at a press conference organised by the assembly members of Atwima Kwanwoma District of the Ashanti region concerning the rioting that occurred on Wednesday, February 7, 2018 at Foase over relocation of the district capital from Foase to Twedie.
Some residents of Foase stormed the venue of the press conference held on Tuesday, February 13, 2018 at the premises of the district assembly to protest and demand retraction of a statement made by the assembly members.
The assembly members at the press conference refuted claims by the residents of Foase that the District Chief Executive for the area, Nana Okyere Tawiah visited Foasehene to bid farewell to relocate the district capital from Foase to Twedie but was there to introduce two new management members to the chief.
The controversial speech read on the assembly members’ behalf by Mr Rockson Owusu Afriyie, assembly member for Apemanim Akokoben stated:”We want to affirm our absolute confidence in our hardworking DCE, Honourable Nana Okyere Tawiah Antwi”.
“Again, we want to place on record that the call for his head is very misplaced and misjudged by some elements who have not averred their minds very well on the issues at stake.
“It is instructive to know on that fateful day, our gentle DCE visited Nana Foasehene to introduce two new management members: the District Co-ordinating Director and the District Head of works to the palace.
“So far as the assembly members are concerned per the road map, we have been furnished with; it will be strange to assume that, that visit was meant to bid the chief and Foase people farewell. It is very unfortunate this and other actions like the removal of air conditioners were misconstrued to be part of the grand scheme to exit Foase without former consultations as the road enjoins”.
This generated confusion at the press conference as some residents of Foase stormed the venue to protest and demand retraction of the statement.
The residents insisted that the DCE was at the chief’s palace to bid farewell to relocate the district capital.
The assembly members for Foase who were also at the press conference detached themselves from the statement.
Mr Charles Fokuo, one of the assembly members for Foase, told Adehye FM’s Elisha Adarkwah that he was not previewed to the press statement and was not there when the decision was taken to organise the conference.
Mr Emmanuel Asuah Dadzie, presiding member for Atwima Kwanwoma District who led the organisation of the press conference, however, was instantly made to rewrite the statement and brief media again.
