I’d rather resign than preside over “evil” gay bill – Speaker

Speaker of Parliament Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye has indicated that he will resign if he is presented with a situation where he is supposed to present a bill to legalise homosexuality in Ghana.

“If anybody should bring such a thing to parliament and I have to preside over that I will rather resign than subscribe to this delusion,” Prof Oquaye told Paul Adom-Otchere in a yet to be aired interview for Good Evening Ghana current affairs programme scheduled for Thursday 10 May 2018.

United Kingdom’s (UK) Prime Minister, Theresa May recently urged Commonwealth nations including Ghana to overhaul “outdated” anti-gay laws and said the U.K. “deeply regrets” its role in the legacy of violence and discrimination.

Ms May drew cheers and applause when she told delegates at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) that “nobody should face discrimination or persecution because of who they are or who they love”.

Campaigners have urged Ms May to intervene over the colonial-era legislation affecting millions of LGBTQI people, as same-sex relations are still illegal in 36 Commonwealth countries.

Ms May further indicated that the UK was ready to help Commonwealth nations to repeal anti-gay laws and embrace homosexuality.

Responding to the Prime Minister in the latest interview Prof Oquaye asked if Ms May is not an offspring of the interaction between a man and a woman.

For him, homosexuality is “evil” and a “calculated attempt by Satan to destroy God’s best formation; that is the human being”.

Prof Oquaye said homosexuality is “very, very evil [and] dangerous [and] the church cannot allow it”.

He however indicated that individuals engaged in the act deserve love and he is ready to help such people to come out of the practice.

“God loves the sinner but He hates sin. We love them, we will teach them and get them out of that miserable situation,” Prof Oquaye added.
