Buokrom Estate: Residents cry over collapsed bridge

Residents of Truba in the Kumasi metropolis have had their movements and economic activities disrupted, following the total collapse of the bridge that linked them to nearby communities, making life unbearable for them.

The bridge, which linked them to Buokrom Estate, Duase and Kenyasi, was destroyed following the devastated rainfall that hit Kumasi and its environs on Thursday, June 28, 2018, which destroyed properties and loss of lives.

Vehicular movements are seriously affected, especially for the school children who commute to other communities for classes as they have to resort to long alternative routes to their destinations, affecting their classes’ hours.

Otec News’ reporters’ Seth Kwarteng and Peninnah Eshun who visited the community said the bridge which was near collapse before the rainfall, has been broken into pieces and most parts falling into the river, making it impassable.

A resident, Kwame Opoku, speaking to Otec news said the bridge destruction has created a lot of problems for them in their economic activities.

“Before the rain collapsing the bridge, we were even afraid using it as it was at a near collapse, now it has been destroyed by the last two weeks heavy rainfall. We can’t go to the market to trade, those who farm in the other communities can no longer go. Even some school children are at home because they cannot swim to go school, those who go use long alternative routes, which comes with a cost” he lamented.

Another resident, Opambour Mensah, also complained that “before the collapse of the bridge, we appealed to the MP of the area, Hon. Collins Owusu Amankwa but we are yet to hear any positive response from him. Because it links to communities like Duaae and Kenyase, we also appealed to the MP of Kwabre East, Hon. Francisca Mensah Oteng, to assist in its reconstruction but she too did nothing about.”

“Now that both MPs have neglected us, we are appealing to both the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly and the Kwabre Municipal Assembly to assist in reconstructing the destroyed bridge to save us from hardships,” Opambour appealed.
