Agogo State College riot: 37 students arrested – Police

37 suspected students of the Agogo State College in the Asante Akim North District of the Ashanti region have been arrested by police following students rioting.

The number, including 33 females and 4 males, according to the police, are suspected leaders of the protest which took place at the school late Sunday.

Speaking in an interview with Captain Koda on Nyansapo show on Tuesday, October 2, 2018, Asante Akyem North Police Commander, ASP James Jerry Ameka stated that the 37 suspected students have been granted ‘self recognizance bail’.

A meeting by a committee made of the Regional Education Director and the District Chief Executive ordered the immediate closure of the school.

However, ASP James Ameka said the police will hand over their report to the authority of the school on Friday, 5th October, 2018 for the necessary action to be taken.

He said, according to their report, the students were protesting the acute water shortage and the unavailability of power supply in the school. Adding that the protest resulted in damage to school property, including furniture, air conditioners at the school’s ICT Lab and the school bus.

He therefore urged the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) authorities in Asante Akyem Agogo to be proactive to avoid any future occurrences.

Meanwhile, Authorities of the school say the students will each be made to pay for the items destroyed during the protest.
