Asantehene to invite feuding KNUST parties

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, will soon invite authorities and students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology for dialogue after the latter rained terror on the university community Monday.

The representative of the Otumfuo, the Batamahene, Baffour Amankwaatia IV, who visited the campus Tuesday afternoon, told the press that the leader the Asante Kingdom, on whose land the university is sited, has traveled and will engage the parties once he is back.

He said the Asantehene will combine with government’s efforts to find solutions to the underpinnings of the Monday event.

The traditional leader slammed the violent protests by the students, saying that hooliganism should not be a way of resolving issues.

“We hope the university will reopen soon for academic work to resume,” he added.

KNUST students protested violently Monday morning against what they described as oppression from school authorities.

Last Friday, the campus security thwarted a customary march by the students which led to some of the students getting injured and hospitalised.

The authorities say the march was disallowed for security concerns but the students defied the order and attempted it anyway.

The Students’ Representative Council (SRC) released a statement during the weekend to inform students of the planned demonstration and boycott of lectures.

The situation however degenerated into mayhem and the school has since closed down indefinitely.

A government delegation led by the Education Minister, was dispatched to the Kumasi–based tertiary institution to meet school authorities.
