Postpone all your funerals – Mortuary workers

The National Chairman of the Ghana Mortuary Workers Association (MOWAG), Edward Mensah has called on all families with funerals to postpone their burial ceremonies following the ongoing strike by the group.

Families who went to the Kolebu Teaching hospital, Okomfo Anokye and Koforidua Central mortuaries for their dead on Friday were turned away by mortuary men.

According to the chairman of MOWAG, the association has been battling with the government to increase their salaries and improve their condition of service for a number of months with no answer.

Speaking on an Accra based radio station, Citi FM, Mr Mensah said the strike will continue until their demands are met, “We have already informed the entire country… so they are aware that there is a strike action.. So I know they have prepared….. So they should either postpone the funeral….”.

He therefore called on aggrieved families to talk to the government to attend to their demands to enable them live in peace.

He however stated that families who made payment earlier before the strike are allowed to take their bodies.

In the Ashanti Region, some bereaved families have been asked to take their bodies to private facilities instead of the Okomfo Anokye mortuary.

The workers also asked bereaved families to suspend all payments.
