Asantehene@20: Otumfuo celebrates ‘Akwasidaekese’ with rich culture display (PHOTOS)

Manhyia Palace in Kumasi, the seat of Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, was full to capacity as thousands of Ghanaians and foreigners came to celebrate the ‘Akwasidaekese’ festival as part of activities marking the 20 years anniversary celebration of the ascension to the Golden Stool by the Asantehene.

The occasion saw a number of dignitaries including President Nana Akufo Addo, Vice President, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, former president John Mahama, former First Lady, Nana Agyemang Konadu Rawlings, Members of Parliaments, members of the Diplomatic Corps.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II ascended the Golden Stool as the 16th Asantehene on 26th April 1999 and has since ruled the kingdom past all five presidents under the fourth republican constitution of the republic of Ghana.

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, entered the palace in a palanquin, dressed in a ‘kente’ cloth, with gold ornaments around his wrists and arms, amidst drumming and firing of muskets.

Per the Asante calendar, the Akwasidae is celebrated nine times in a 40-day interval in a year, however the Akwasidaekese is marked every five years.

The newly crowned Dagbon King, Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II, also announced his presence at the durbar riding on a horse.
