Coronavirus: PPEs are now being stolen – Minority alleges

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has alleged that Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) that have been acquired by the government to combat the spread of the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) are now being stolen.

They, however, did not identify any individual or group of persons who are involved in this act.

The group suspects that the situation is as a result of unfair treatment being meted out to the persons who are either directly involved in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic or have been affected by the virus.

At a press conference in Accra on Thursday, May 7, 2020, to share the views on how the coronavirus has so far been handled by the government, the Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu, said the utilization of GH?2,000,000 a day by the government to provide meals for the vulnerable during the lockdown days needed much to be desired.

He said food packages that were provided to the needy and vulnerable in communities that were affected by the lockdown were so demeaning that the group wasn’t surprise when they heard that PPEs were now been stolen.

“Even if you are to spend GH?2million a day, Papaye standard, we should know what a vulnerable Ghanaian must be deserving of in terms of a dignified honourable meal and not that insulting package of food that was given out in respect of the GH?2million. You further said you needed additional GH?280 million for that purpose. So, shorten the period, multiply GH?2million by the number of days of the lockdown and we demand an accountability for the rest of the money. No wonder we are hearing reports that the PPEs are now being stolen”, he narrated.

According to the Minority Leader, with the situation at hand, it will not be farfetched for the Minority to demand an audit into all the expenditure related to COVID-19.

“Whether the money came from internal sources or from the World Bank/IMF sources, we will demand for an audit into it”, he stressed.
