NSS Being Optional Is Progressive – Former NUGS President Supports Bawumia Idea

Yiadom Boakye Emmanuel, Former NUGS President

Yiadom Boakye Emmanuel, a former President for the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) says making national service optional for graduates from the university was only a progressive idea.

He therefore commended the Vice President,  Dr Mahamodu Bawumia for being progressive in his thinking.

Speaking to this reporter on Saturday, Mr Yiadom Boakye noted that the time had come for leaders of the nation to allow graduates or students to choose what they would want to do with the knowledge they had acquired from the university and in life.

“Even though i agree that the National Service Secretariat by the postings and opportunities they give to graduates do offer them the chance to explore their talents from the education they had received, graduates should freely choose whether to offer that service or not”, the Former NUGS President intimated.

Details:

Mr Yiadom posited that the NSS not be scrapped since some may choose that option.

He noted that, “as much as it provides soft landings and work experiences  for some fresh graduates, it shouldn’t also stop fresh graduates from been employed especially

into the public sector with or without it”.

Mr Boakye therefore urged those who are currently undertaking their service to do it well and get the experiences.

“Serve well while you have signed on to do the national service and know that many have gotten secured job opportunities by doing so”, Mr Boakye stressed.

Issues:

Mr Boakye disclosed that many graduates were not taking the service serious.

He noted that this is due to many factors including lack of motivation.

He therefore urged the secretariat to encourage service providers and affiliates of the scheme to come up with innovative ideas and incentives to make graduates serve with happiness.
