Free SHS: Send your ward to private schools if you can afford it – Akufo-Addo tells well-to-do parents
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has stated that individuals who can afford to pay school fees should enroll their children in private schools, rather than advocating for fees under the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy.
Speaking at the Ghana Bar Association’s annual conference in Kumasi on Monday, the President emphasized that public schools, funded by taxpayers, should be free for all, especially those who may find it difficult to pay.
He noted that this is the reason why the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government is committed to ensuring the successful implementation of the Free SHS policy.
President Akufo-Addo’s comments were in response to suggestions by some individuals that well-to-do parents should be required to pay fees under the Free SHS policy.
The President argued that such a move would undermine the purpose of the policy, which is to provide equal access to education for all, regardless of socio-economic background.
He emphasized that the Free SHS policy is a social intervention program aimed at reducing the financial burden on parents and guardians, and promoting inclusivity in education.
