Fire Service contains Kejetia Market fire, saves goods worth hundreds of cedis

The Ghana National Fire Service, GNFS, has contained a fire outbreak at the Kumasi Kejetia Market, saving goods worth hundreds of Ghana cedis.

The fire, which started from a shop that deals in the sale of matches, was immediately doused by fire officers.

The cause of the fire, which occurred on Monday, April 20, 2026, is not immediately known.

The shop in question, however, lost goods worth hundreds of cedis to the inferno.

Speaking to OTEC News Reporter Kwame Agyenim Boateng, the Acting Managing Director for Kumasi City Market Limited, Ernest Afayam, disclosed that only one shop was affected by the fire.

“We are fortunate the fire service personnel stationed here in the market responded to the fire quickly and this prevented the inferno from spreading,” he said.

He noted that the management of the market will keep monitoring traders to ensure they work within the stipulated rules guiding the facility.

For his part, the President of the Federation of Kumasi Traders, Nana Kwasi Prempeh, hailed the officers of the GNFS for their swift response.

He urged the traders to be vigilant in their activities to avoid future occurrences.

Meanwhile, the Ghana National Fire Service has commenced investigations into the incident to establish the cause of the fire.
