Kumasi: Chaos and confusion as Suame residents block road over stalled interchange project (Video)

Residents and workers at Suame Magazine in Ashanti Region have taken to the streets to protest the stalled Suame Interchange project, blocking the Suame post office Road and setting lorry tyres ablaze.

The demonstrators are accusing government of abandoning the site without notice, leaving behind deep pits, dust pollution, and exposed road surfaces that are endangering traders and motorists.

The demonstration on Tuesday March 31, 2026 saw dozens of residents joining to vent their frustrations

“We are suffering. The dust is too much. Our shops are covered every day, and customers can’t come here,” a frustrated worker said, echoing the sentiments of many protesters.

The project, announced in 2022, aimed to ease chronic traffic congestion and rehabilitate deteriorating road infrastructure in Suame, a key industrial hub and home to West Africa’s largest automotive spare parts market.

Despite initial works commencing in 2023, the project has faced delays, with local authorities citing funding challenges and coordination issues among contractors.

The protesters are demanding urgent action to address the situation, which they say is affecting their health and businesses.
