Midnight fire razes Sunyani courts, destroys case files and equipment

A devastating pre-dawn fire has gutted the Circuit Court and District Court ‘B’ complex in Sunyani in the Bono Region, leaving extensive destruction in its wake and raising urgent concerns over the possible loss of critical judicial records and disruption to court operations.

The blaze reportedly broke out around 3:00 a.m. on Sunday, 26 April 2026, rapidly spreading through key sections of the facility before emergency responders could contain it. By dawn, the damage was already extensive charred walls, blown-out windows, and heavily damaged office spaces bearing testimony to the intensity of the inferno.

As of 7:40 a.m., personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service were still on the ground battling the flames under extremely difficult conditions.

“We are still on the ground fighting the fire, but access to water has been a major challenge,” a fire service source told Asaase News, highlighting the operational difficulties confronting the emergency response team.

Despite sustained efforts, the fire had already consumed significant portions of the building, destroying volumes of case files, official court documents, and essential administrative equipment.

The full extent of the damage remains uncertain, but early indications suggest a substantial loss of records that may prove critical to ongoing and pending legal proceedings.

At the time of filing this report, the cause of the fire had not been determined. Fire investigators are still on-site working alongside firefighting crews to bring the situation under control and begin preliminary assessments.
