Assin Kwafokrom: Two pupils killed, 40 others injured in school bus crash

Two pupils of Alice Elites Academy, a preparatory school at Assin Edubiase in the Assin South District of the Central Region, have lost their lives in a tragic road accident involving a school bus.
The deceased, a boy and a girl, ages ranging between 3 and 5, were among more than 40 pupils travelling in a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus with registration number AS 2218-20 when the accident occurred on the Assin Kwafokrom–Homaho road.
According to information gathered, the bus veered off the road and plunged into a river after the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle.
Information gathered from the Central North Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) suggests the 40 injured pupils were rushed to nearby health facilities for treatment.
22 of the victims were transported to St. Francis Xavier Hospital in Assin Fosu, while the remaining 18 were taken to the Assin Edubiase Health Centre for medical attention.
All the 40 injured pupils received treatment and have since been discharged and handed over to their respective families.
Police said it has commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident, adding that the school proprietor and other responsible persons could be held accountable if negligence is established.
The school’s authorities are yet to issue any formal communication on the incident.
However, the entire Assin Edubiase community has been thrown into a state of deep sorrow and mourning.
