KATH Doctors, Nurses to call off strike after talks with Amoakohene

Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has disclosed that a positive resolution has been reached with doctors, nurses, and midwives at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) to get them to call off their strike following a crunch meeting he held with the leadership of the various associations.

Members of the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association embarked on a strike on Saturday, June 6, following a decision by the Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, to suspend the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer after a directive to temporarily halt new admissions at the Accident and Emergency Unit due to congestion.

The strike by the doctors, which nearly grounded healthcare delivery, was compounded after nurses and midwives joined the action to compel the reinstatement of the hospital’s CEO.

Dr. Frank Amoakohene, on Sunday, June 7, met the leadership of the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association, the Ashanti Regional chapter of the Ghana Medical Association, and the leadership of the Nurses and Midwives to find a solution to the impasse.

Dr. Amoakohene told Citi News that the outcome of the meeting was positive and that the leadership of the Associations would communicate the details to the public.

He said the meeting also afforded an opportunity to adopt measures aimed at addressing the pressure on the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

Dr. Amoakohene also spoke about plans to operationalise the Afari, Trede, Oforikrom, and Sewua hospitals to help ease pressure on the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

The Ashanti Regional Director of the Ghana Health Service and other officials were part of the meeting, but the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital CEO was represented by a staff member of the hospital.

The leadership of the various Associations said they would convene a meeting with their members to relay the outcome before issuing a public statement on their decision
