Mpasatia: 27-year-old man allegedly lynched over tricycle theft

A 27-year-old man has been lynched at Mpasatia in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region after he was allegedly accused of stealing a tricycle, popularly known as an “aboboyaa.”

The deceased, whose identity has not yet been officially confirmed, was reportedly apprehended by some residents of the community in the early hours of the day over allegations that he had stolen the tricycle.

According to reports gathered by OTEC News, the suspect was arrested by residents around 3:00 a.m. and was allegedly subjected to severe beatings.

“The young man was allegedly caught in connection with the theft of an aboboyaa and was later found dead under circumstances believed to be linked to mob action,” a source in the community disclosed.

Although the exact circumstances surrounding his death are yet to be established, preliminary reports suggest he may have died from injuries sustained during the assault.

The incident has since been reported to the police, who have commenced investigations into both the alleged theft and the circumstances that led to the man’s death.

A police source indicated that the identity of the deceased has not yet been released pending the notification of his family and further investigations.

“We are investigating the matter to establish the facts surrounding the incident and identify all persons involved,” the source said.

The latest incident has renewed concerns over mob justice in some communities, with residents being urged to hand over suspected criminals to law enforcement authorities rather than taking the law into their own hands.
