The New Patriotic Party, NPP, has accused the incumbent National Democratic Congress, NDC, of using the conviction of its Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, as a trophy to Ghanaians to cover its failure to fight illegal mining.
Addressing a press conference on Monday, the General Secretary for the NPP, Justin Kodua Frimpong, said the party rejects the conviction outright, describing it as political persecution.
“They think that the conviction of Chairman Wontumi will be the trophy to appease the Ghanaian People for their own failures. However, this is no trophy.”
Mr. Kodua noted that despite the conviction, Ghanaians will continue to demand answers from the government over alleged involvement of some appointees in the current administration in illegal mining activities.
According to the NPP General Secretary, Chairman Wontumi’s conviction is a clear case of selective justice, and the party will not accept a situation where only members of the opposition are targeted by the courts.
He added that the NPP will fight the conviction through all legal means available to ensure that justice is served for Chairman Wontumi and that due process is followed in the matter.
