Offinso College of Education Principal begs government to complete stalled ICT complex and hostel projects
The Principal of Offinso College of Education, Very Rev. Dr. Joseph Nkyi Asamoah, has appealed passionately to government to complete all uncompleted projects at the college to match the growing student population and improved academic performance.
Speaking at the college’s 18th Congregation Service on campus in Offinso in the Ashanti Region, Very Rev. Dr. Nkyi Asamoah said government started an ICT Complex for the institution but contractors have evacuated the site, leaving the project abandoned.
He added that another project, a 300-bed capacity hostel awarded two years ago, has also stalled at roofing level because GETFund has been unable to pay contractors, forcing them to leave the site.
The Principal noted that the college’s population has increased significantly in recent years and academic work has improved massively, making the completion of these facilities critical to supporting teaching and learning.
Turning to the newly graduated teachers, Very Rev. Dr. Nkyi Asamoah charged them to accept postings to rural areas without hesitation.
He explained that rural communities need teachers the most and graduates must transfer the knowledge they have acquired to children in those areas.
He said the cities are already choked and there is a lot to learn from teaching in rural schools, so teachers should not limit themselves to urban postings.
He further urged government to fulfill its promise of a 20 percent salary increment for teachers who accept to teach in rural areas, saying that delivering on that pledge will encourage more graduates to serve outside the cities.
The Special Guest of Honor, Nana Dr. Appiagyei Dankawoso I, Past President of Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, who is also an alumnus of Offinso College of Education from 1993 to 1996, commended his year group for supporting the school in diverse ways. He disclosed that they are currently constructing a school clinic which is almost complete.
Nana Dankawoso I, who served as school prefect during his time at the college, said the institution had honored him by naming the longest street on campus after him as the Nana Dr. Appiagyei Dankawoso I Street in recognition of his contributions.
He charged the graduands to uphold the values of the teaching profession and to use their skills well in all their endeavors.
The congregation brought together graduands, parents, alumni and traditional leaders to celebrate another batch of trained teachers from Offinso College of Education.
