Transparency International Ghana trains journalists on defence integrity reporting to strengthen accountability

 Transparency International Ghana has organised a training workshop for journalists and media practitioners on defence integrity reporting, aimed at promoting accountability, transparency, and good governance in Ghana’s defence sector.

The workshop, held at the Mac Bennett Hotel in Adakwa Jachie in the Ashanti Region on Thursday, was designed to equip journalists with a practical understanding of defence integrity as a key area of governance.

It covered the risks, institutions, and oversight mechanisms needed to promote transparency and accountability.

Speaking at the opening of the programme, the Funding Manager for Transparency International Ghana, Mr. Michael Kwame Boadi, noted that many activities within the military are often conducted away from public scrutiny, making accountability more challenging. 

“Some military operations must remain confidential for national security reasons. However, information relating to defence governance, such as government-approved budgets and expenditure, should be made available to the public to strengthen transparency and public trust,”he said.

Mr. Boadi further explained that corruption goes beyond the exchange of money. 

“Corruption also includes the abuse of entrusted power for private or personal gain,”. he stressed.

He urged journalists to deepen their understanding of defence governance and integrity issues. 

“We need journalists to produce accurate, balanced, and impactful reports that promote accountability while respecting national security concerns,” he added.

The workshop forms part of Transparency International Ghana’s efforts to strengthen media capacity and enhance public oversight of the defence sector through responsible and informed journalism.
